About the RCF
Mission
The RCF has been created with the express purpose of facilitating the use of cutting-edge computational facilities and software by non-specialist researchers within EaStCHEM.
We are the first resource of our kind in the country dedicated to creating such close links between computational chemistry and other parts of the chemistry research community.
This will lead to EaStCHEM becoming a world-leading centre in the computational study of experimentally relevant problems.
The RCF will achieve this through activities in a number of areas:
- Access
- Hardware and software
- Positions dedicated to facilitating the use of the resources by experimental researchers
- Training for users
- Scientific/parallel programming support
- Promotion
- Within EaStCHEM
- To general chemistry community
- Outwith chemistry community
- Collaboration
- Between EaStCHEM researchers
- Between different institutions and departments
- Integration
- With local HPC facilities
- With national HPC facilities
Infrastructure
The facility consists of two RCOs and two HPC facilities. One RCO and HPC facility is based in Edinburgh (Dr Andrew Turner) and the other in St Andrews (Dr Herbert Fructl).
Funding
Our funding comes from a variety of sources. In Edinburgh the appointment of the RCO is funded by the edikt2 project.
In the medium to long term, we expect the facility to be funded by contributions from the research grants of users of the service.
